On the Reynolds number scaling of vorticity production at no-slip walls during vortex-wall collisions

چکیده
Recently, numerical studies revealed two different scaling regimes of the peak enstrophy Z and palinstrophy P during the collision of a dipole with a no-slip wall [Clercx and van Heijst, Phys. Rev. E 65, 066305, 2002]: Z ∝ Re0.8 and P ∝ Re2.25 for 5 × 102 ≤ Re ≤ 2 × 104 and Z ∝ Re0.5 and P ∝ Re1.5 for Re ≥ 2 × 104 (with Re based on the velocity and size of the dipole). A critical Reynolds number Rec (here, Rec ≈ 2 × 104) is identified below which the interaction time of the dipole with the boundary layer depends on the kinematic viscosity ν. The oscillating plate as a boundary-layer problem can then be used to mimick the vortex-wall interaction and the following scaling relations are obtained: Z ∝ Re3/4, P ∝ Re9/4, and dP/dt ∝ Re11/4 in agreement with the numerically obtained scaling laws. For Re ≥ Rec the interaction time of the dipole with the boundary layer becomes independent of the kinematic viscosity and, applying flat-plate boundary-layer theory, this yields: Z ∝ Re1/2 and P ∝ Re3/2.

Codimension three bifurcation of streamline patterns close to a no-slip wall: A topological description of boundary layer eruption
A vortex close to a no-slip wall gives rise to the creation of new vorticity at the wall. This vorticity may organize itself into vortices that erupt from the separated boundary layer. We study how the eruption process in terms of the streamline topology is initiated and varies in dependence of the Reynolds number Re. We show that vortex structures are created in the boundary layer for Re aroun...

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...
متن کاملHybrid Vortex/magnet Methods for Flow over a Solid Boundary
Boundary conditions, in particular no-slip boundary conditions, are usually imposed in vor-tex methods through the creation of vorticity. In three dimensions, this is typically done by creating vortex \blobs" or \segments". However, with these computational elements, one compromises accuracy by losing the divergence-free nature of the vorticity eld. Furthermore, these methods preclude the use o...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder
Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Reynolds Number Effects on Flow over a Wall-Mounted Cube in a Channel Using LES
Turbulent flow over wall-mounted cube in a channel was investigated numerically using Large Eddy Simulation. The Selective Structure Function model was used to determine eddy viscosity that appeared in the subgrid scale stress terms in momentum equations. Studies were carried out for the flows with Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 40000. To evaluate the computational results, data was compa...
